ReplyDeleteThank you, John. That means a lot coming from a genuine Houdini relation. :)
DeleteI have been fasinated with Harry Houdini. There was a recent exhibit on him in San Francisco, at the Jewish Museum. I wish there was a half decent movie made about him, but in my opinion, they were all awful. There will never be another like him, that's for sure. What a mind!
ReplyDeleteHi Dorrit. If you click the "Houdini Art and Magic" tag you'll find several articles about the SF/Jewish Museum exhibition. I traveled to SF and covered a talk by Ken Silverman there.
DeleteAlso, I wouldn't say all the HH biopics were all awful. I rather like Houdini (1953) and The Great Houdinis (1976). Sure, they're not accurate, but I don't expect that from Hollywood.
Dear Mr. Cox,
ReplyDeleteHoudini was my idol and 'escape' from an unhappy childhood. I read books about him over and over and dabbled in neighborhood magic shows and small feats of escape for local hospitals, schools and anyone who would take the time to watch. I recall driving my boyhood friends crazy, having them tie me up and watch me try different tricks. Once a policeman placed real handcuffs on me at a local restaurant I worked at, which I opened in about a minute and a half. My mother once told me saw him she when she was a little girl and seems to remember the vanishing elephant and some flying birds.
I just came upon this site and have enjoyed the various articles. Thank you for an enjoyable visit.
Thank you for the comment and for sharing. Love that you escaped real police handcuffs as a kid. And your mother saw Houdini? That's fantastic. Glad you found and enjoyed my blog. Stick around. Lots more HH to come.
