The Mirror Handcuffs were featured on The History Channel's 101 Objects That Changed the World this week. Houdini's famous challenge cuffs came in at #73, right between The Wedding Ring (#74) and Dorothy's Ruby Slippers (#72).
I didn't catch the show myself, but the fine folks over at Handcuffs.org say the program featured current Mirror owner David Copperfield showing off the original cuffs, keys, and display board in his Las Vegas magic collection. Hopefully the show will repeat.
And in case you're wondering, object #1 was The Bible.
I missed the mirror handcuff on the history channel but I did catch the 10 minute interview that John Blackstone did with David Copperfield on the CBS News Sunday Morning show. David gave a tour of his museum of magic. Thanks for sharing the news about the history channel and posting the link to the incredible photos of David’s museum; I would love to visit it someday.
ReplyDeleteI removed the link from this story and posted it along with video of the CBS segment here: http://www.wildabouthoudini.com/2013/05/inside-copperfield-collection.html
DeleteChanged the world? Are they kidding? How many people have even heard of the challenge, let alone being changed by it? Houdini himself was already an established star before the Mirror challenge and gave up handcuff escapes a few years later. The challenge didn't even change HIS life. Sorry, just don't see it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it is weird. I didn't see the show, but my guess is the Mirror cuff was just representative of Houdini and his career -- the first modern superstar.
DeleteThis photo represents the first time I realize that Houdini is sitting in a chair while examining the Mirror Cuffs. The chair has always been cropped out of this photo in previous incarnations.
ReplyDeleteYes, you rarely see the uncropped version. I'm not sure where I got this from.
