Elephant in the room?

Here's another photo from HISTORY's upcoming Houdini miniseries starring Adrien Brody. This one shows what appears to be Houdini performing in a circus, presumably early in his career. Or is it?

I actually think this photo might show Houdini at the height of his career, on stage at the New York Hippodrome in 1918 performing his famous Vanishing Elephant. Recall that the Cheer Up! review in which Houdini performed this famous feat was circus themed. And the costume Brody is wearing is a good match for the "ringmaster" clothes Houdini wore in the review (click for pic). Those who didn't like the changes seen in yesterday's photos of the Milk Can and Water Torture Cell can take some solace in the accuracy here.

Further evidence that the biopic will feature the elephant vanish comes from the logo used during production in Budapest last year. It featured a nice silhouette of Houdini's elephant, "Jennie."

If this is indeed our first look at the Vanishing Elephant, this is exciting because it will mark the first live action depiction of this famous magic feat in a Houdini biopic (the Tony Curtis movie only referenced it with a Variety headline in a montage).

Houdini co-stars Kristen Connolly as Bess and Evan Jones as Jim Collins. It's directed by Uli Edel from a script by Nicholas Meyer. The 4-hour, two-part miniseries airs September 1 & 2 at 9pm ET/PT on HISTORY.

  1. These photos are awesome. The sets remind me of the accuracy of Boardwalk Empire.
