LINK: Inside the Houdini-Industrial Complex
While we are all still discussing HISTORY's Houdini miniseries (and I'm scrambling to get my full review up in the next hour), it's worth taking a time out to read this article by Rachel Shteir in Salon about the current state of the "Houdini-Industrial Complex" (love that). You'll see a few familiar names quoted.

Good but strange article. She seemed intrigued and perplexed at the same time. And filled with back-handed compliments.
ReplyDelete"Although the Internet has created a new generation of amateur Houdini buffs, like John Cox, who runs the well-informed blog, Wild About Harry..."
"Internet created? ", "amateur?". Did she not know about your straight-jacket escape on the Toni Tennille Variety Talk Show in the mid '70's? :)
I know. A little odd. We had lengthy interview and I hooked her up with some of the people she quotes. I liked her. At the end of our interview, she thanked me for "all my nuanced answers." Wasn't sure if that was a compliment or not. Think she wanted some better, shorter quotes. But I was being careful after really blowing it in my Chicago Tribune interview. In fact, I think what I said about revealing secrets was, "It depends on the secret and it depends on how and where it's revealed."
DeleteKudos for the mention. Especially in the wake of the miniseries, more people need to get acquainted with your site.
ReplyDeleteI am anxious te read your review. I put mine up on IMDB and Amazon in a heat of passion but might revise it once I've cooled off a bit.

Its about to go up. Yes, I've also wanted to avoid the heat of passion. I'd like to hold off even longer because David Saltman has just posted his review on The Houdini File, and talk about heat! But I have to leave for work in a half hour and I think it needs to go up today.
