"Houdini cares not for showy clothes"

I love stories about Houdini the sloppy dresser, and there are no shortage of them! But I tend to associate this characteristic with the older Houdini of the 1920s. But here's an item from the May 24, 1908 Philadelphia Inquirer when Houdini was only 34 years old. There's a lot to like here, so enjoy.

  1. Wow! There's a lot in this post to savor:

    1. I've never seen that photo of HH in the white dress shirt.

    2. By 1908 he appears to have lost interest in looking fashionable, yet he dressed like a dandy soon after hitting the big time in 1900. You can see photos of him sporting Italian shoes, a top hat, walking stick, and spiffy outfits.

    3. The writer of this article has a sense of humor.

  2. I just came across this in Silverman's notes book:

Gus Rapp said that HH told him he neglected his appearance for his mothers sake. Since the family had been too poor to dress well, when she saw him otherwise he seemed a stranger, "so to please his mother he always wore old clothes."
