LINK: Houdini monument in ruin

A marker commemorating Houdini's historic flight in Australia is currently lying in pieces along Holden Road in Diggers Rest. The cause of the damage is unknown. The monument was erected in 1990 to celebrate “80 Years of Flight.” You can read a full report by David O'Conner at DiggersRest.com by clicking the headline or the image below.

A second monument to Houdini's flight, erected in 2010, stands at Old Calder Highway, Stan Payne Reserve, in Diggers Rest.

Below is the marker as it stood. Here's hoping it will be restored.

  1. Have a sign company give out there and put the marker back up with reinforcement.

  2. Who put it up? A local organization I would suspect.

  3. If I can be of assistance to restore this historical monument back to its original location, please connect me to those in charge. In the past, I have donated with the restoration of the "Houdini Gravesite." I want to think positive that "maybe, a strong wind toppled this monument or it wasn't erected properly as this stone looks heavy?" However, I do know "people know Houdini was a fellow Jew and this could have been an antisemitic part of vandalism."😔

  4. If it was vandalism, you'd expect to see the faceplate itself attacked. I think it's more likely a car hit it. Or it could have just collapsed on its own. It was 35 years old and open to the elements. Perhaps the base just couldn't support it anymore.
